Online cosmetology classes
Cosmetology is a career field that is expected to grow over the next 10 years.
This is an exciting time to be a cosmetologist in Ohio. The field is bursting with creative styling ideas, and clients are clamoring for color that is not just flattering but exciting as well. All of this places the cosmetologist in an enviable position. In addition, jobs are plentiful throughout the state.
Cosmetology Growth
According to the United States Department of Labor, the number of jobs available for cosmetologists is increasing and outpacing the growth of many other industries by a whopping 10 percent. In 2016, nearly 674,000 jobs were held by cosmetologists nationwide, and at least 70,000 more will soon be added. The reasons for this growth are linked to population growth and an improved economy. World Population Review identifies Ohio’s population growth as one that exceeds many other areas of the country. This means that new and seasoned cosmetologists alike will have more than enough jobs from which to choose.
Continuing Education Requirements in Ohio
The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology requires all cosmetologists in the state to renew their license every two years. During that two-year period, the licensee must complete 8 hours of continuing education. The hours are divided into specific subject areas:
  • Sanitation and Safety (2 hours): If a course on safety and sanitation is going to be used to satisfy the requirement for multiple licenses, then it needs to be taken as a separate course entity.
  • Specific service topics (5 hours): This entails specific topics within the scope of the service the cosmetologist provides.
  • Ohio Board Laws and Rules course (1 hour): This one-hour course is provided solely by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology.
If the sanitation and safety courses are taken separately, the cosmetologist will still need to complete five hours of service area specific continuing education.

Taking continuing education courses helps a cosmetologist keep up with the latest styles and trends.
Some Exceptions
There are a few exceptions to the renewal process:
First time license renewals: Licensees that are renewing their license for the first time do not need to take continuing education classes. They do need to renew and pay the renewal fee.
Inactive license holders: Inactive license holders do not need to take continuing education courses. When the license is restored to an active statue, the licensee will need to take the CE courses to permit a status change.
65 years of age and older: If you are 65 or older and your 65th birthday was prior to Jan. 31, 2019, you will not need to complete continuing education courses to renew. You must renew, however, and pay the renewal fee.
Lapsed license holders: If you failed to renew your license by paying the renewal fee for two years back to back, your license is considered lapsed. To reactivate it, you must take 24-hours of continuing education, and pay the renewal fees for the four-year period. A current renewal fee is also required.
Approved Course Providers
Not all providers of renewal courses are approved by the state. If you take the courses from an unapproved provider, they cannot be used to renew your license. Online cosmetology courses, such as those given by Beauty Academy, are approved by the state board for cosmetology managing and cosmetology licenses. Our online classes are also approved for the two hours of sanitation and safety coursework needed for any type of license required by the cosmetology board.
