<p>Jessica provides National Academy of Beauty students an understanding of this evolving and exciting industry, encourages them to think laterally about how they will engage in industry as well as promotes values, soft skills and a positive attitude.</p>
<p>While it’s known that our students have the necessary skills to make them fantastic beauty therapists, Jessica helps them also consider their approach in a new workplace and how to find the right work environment fit for them. With everything from specialised boutiques to franchise clinics requiring beauty therapists, Jessica’s goal is for all graduates to find the workplace most suitable for them.</p>
<p>Jessica’s diverse background has enabled her to see gaps in the beauty industry therefore driving her to work with upcoming beauty therapists and clinics alike to help flourish. Working as a Registered Nurse at the Royal Women’s Hospital, a Business Development Manager within the health sector and a Cosmetic Nurse, she believes the industry is on the cusp of becoming bigger and better than ever.</p>
<p>Jessica sees National Academy of Beauty students emerging as future leaders in the industry. Through the The Therapist Co she aims to help them shape their career in a personalised manner that provides them with a work environment they love, enables greater job satisfaction and better work/life balance while achieving high-quality work and results for their clients.</p>

Behind the Scenes with Kaitlyn Menere

<p>At the National Academy of Beauty, we have an abundance of talented people on board with specialist makeup trainer and assessor, Kaitlyn Menere, being one of them.</p>
<p>Kaitlyn brings a wealth of knowledge into the classroom thanks to her extensive industry experience. What began as a passion for art and drawing led into the world of makeup where Kaitlyn worked in makeup artistry and management for Napoleon Perdis and joined the creative teams backstage for Mercedez Benz Fashion Week and Melbourne Fashion Festival.</p>
<p>Kaitlyn’s experience extends into retail, bridal, stage productions and editorial enabling her to share valuable industry knowledge and insight for our students.</p>

<h2>What has been your makeup artistry journey?</h2>
<p>I was always into art and drawing, after completing a year at an Arts Academy, I started a Cert II during year 11 at High School and fell in love with makeup artistry. After completing year 12, I went on to do my Diploma of Specialist Make-up full time and landed a job at Napoleon Perdis. I worked for Napoleon Perdis for just shy of 4 years, and throughout my time I was promoted to manage two Flagship stores. During this time, I was also a part of the support Creative Team, which gave me great opportunities such as Mercedez Benz Fashion Week, Melbourne Fashion Festival and working with some of the top designers and clothing labels.</p>
<p>In 2015 I decided to venture out and open a one-stop beauty shop in Ringwood East with a friend, where we had a variety of beauty services before moving into my first training job. Shortly after I found my way to the National Academy of Beauty and since 2009 I have also run my own freelance business.</p>
<h2>How would you describe your style of makeup? Who is it most suitable for?</h2>
<p>I don’t think I have a specific style of makeup, there are makeup looks I enjoy doing more than others, it also depends on what’s on trend and the client’s needs/expectations. Currently, I would say I’m all about fresh glowy skin, brushed up brows and a bold lip (but who isn’t?).</p>
<h2>In addition to training and assessing, what industry do you work in?</h2>
<p>I have worked in bridal, commercial, stage productions, retail, education, editorial and e-commerce, as well as hairstyling, spray tanning, waxing, lash extensions and nails.</p>
<h2>What’s the coolest thing you have done as a makeup artist?</h2>
<p>Such a hard question! I think Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week and a few other Melbourne Fashion Festivals would probably be the coolest events I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of. I’m very lucky to do a lot of cool jobs though!</p>
<h2>What is a myth about makeup artistry you would like to dispel?</h2>
<p>There are so many! My main one would be that it’s easy! There is so much time, practice, money and failures that go into being a good makeup artist that a lot of people don’t understand. It is definitely not something you can just pick up from watching YouTube.</p>
<h2>What should people know about makeup artistry?</h2>
<p>It is one of the most rewarding careers you can have! There are so many different pathways to take, that can lead to meeting so many people and so many opportunities. It’s amazing being able to do what you love every day and be paid for it.</p>
<h2>How do up and coming artists make contacts and get their name out there?</h2>
<p>Always be over-prepared for jobs and look professional and presentable. Be nice to everyone as this industry is a lot about who you know, rather than what you know. You never know who might be a potential client.</p>
<h2>How important is social media in today’s makeup landscape? What other things are important for building yourself as a brand?</h2>
<p>You are a walking billboard for your brand, the way you present and conduct yourself in public and online is how people will interpret your business. Social Media is both a blessing and a curse for makeup artists now. It’s great because it provides a free and accessible platform for your portfolio but can be hard to set yourself apart from the other million makeup artists on there.</p>
<h2>What do you think makes a great makeup artist?</h2>
<p>I think creativity plays a big part in makeup artistry, as well as being hard working, professional and persistent.</p>
<h2>How do you stay up to date with the latest trends and techniques?</h2>
<p>I find inspiring social media accounts, follow designers and read lots of magazines.</p>
<h2>What do you love about being a makeup artist and trainer at the National Academy of Beauty?</h2>
<p>I love being creative and making people look and feel amazing. Being a trainer is incredibly rewarding as you watch students’ skills and confidence develop throughout the course.</p>
<h2>Why is studying makeup and obtaining a qualification important for up and coming makeup artists?</h2>
<p>It’s important to obtain a qualification so you can enter the industry with confidence and knowledge.</p>
<h2>How can students accelerate their career in makeup?</h2>

Hairy Solution: What Hair Removal Method is Right for You?

<p>Hair removal is one of the biggest profit-making services in the beauty industry. New technologies and products are constantly coming into the market to make hair removal more painless, faster and with longer lasting results.</p>
<p>Each method comes with its pros, cons and price tag, so it is important for clients to research each method to find the one most suitable for them as well as ensuring they book in with a qualified therapist to perform the service.</p>
<p>So what hair removal methods are available? Our Beauty Therapist and Trainer, Kimberley Duck, breaks it down.</p>
<h2>The Creamy Solution</h2>
<p>Hair removal creams are a popular choice as they are pain free, cost effective and can be done by clients at home. They offer a temporary method of hair removal and contain very strong chemical ingredients to dissolve hair from the surface of the skin. The chemicals can cause damage to the natural protective barrier of the skin and those that have sensitive skin can often react with these creams.</p>

<h2>Wax It Off</h2>
<p>Waxing is still one of the most popular salon treatments available, if performed by a qualified beauty therapist can be quick, gives a smooth finish and with the correct techniques can be only mildly uncomfortable. Waxing is within the medium price range of hair removal options.</p>
<p>Providing a longer lasting result than creams, it still is only a temporary fix but can slowly decrease growth patterns after continuous treatments. One benefit of waxing is that you can grow or remove hair according to trends. Eyebrows is the most common with trend changes, so clients can choose to let the hair grow back and redesign as they please.</p>
<h2>Thread It Out</h2>
<p>Threading for facial hair dates back hundreds of years from India and is still practiced within these families. Many Indian woman have now opened threading businesses all over the world that have become extremely popular with a diverse range of clients.</p>
<p>The fine thread and the precise technique used allows each individual hair to be removed. If the correct support if given to the skin the service is only mildly uncomfortable, quick and gives a very clean neat finish.</p>
<h2>Point a Laser at It</h2>
<p>Laser hair removal clinics and services are now seen within each main street, major department store and skin clinic countrywide. Provided the service is performed at a reputable business, extensive training has been provided to the therapists and thorough consultation has been performed, laser hair removal is an extremely result driven treatment.</p>
<p>This process can take time as sessions are done 6-8 weeks apart with 8-10 treatments required and the sessions can be quite costly however most salons provide a discount when more than one area is treated. Once the course of treatment is complete the client may only need to come in for one or two maintenance treatments are year. Classified as permanent hair removal, laser hair removal ensures clients do not need to worry about hair growing back and will save money long term without having to pay for regular waxing services or hair removal products.</p>
<p>Virtually painless, sessions are very quick, and results begin after the first treatment. Having recently received laser treatment myself I can’t recommend it enough for complete hair free results. Always discuss your health history including medications with your therapist prior as these can cause unwanted effects from laser treatments.</p>

<p>Topical solutions and treatments are still just as important however what’s in your kitchen also plays a big part in obtaining a beautiful complexion.</p>
<p>Our talented trainer and beauty therapist, Kimberley Duck, lets us in on some industry insights including the ultimate skin food, what’s the deal with collagen drinks and are supplements important for youthful looking skin.</p>
<h2>What is the ultimate skin food?</h2>
<p>I’ve found that since adding cinnamon to my morning smoothie it has really boosted the circulation in my skin, helping to detox and reduce the number of breakouts.</p>
<p>The basic spice stimulates the skin and brings a surge of oxygen and nutrients. Many anti-ageing skin products contain cinnamon extract due to its natural heating abilities within the skin and body.</p>
<p>Cinnamon can help to stabilize and balance blood sugar levels, which is important in controlling breakouts, oil flow and congestion.</p>

<p><2>What do you think about new collagen type drinks and beauty supplements? Do they work?</p>
<p>Provided your health is functioning at an optimum level then the collagen drinks may boost the skin, however if the body is suffering from deficiencies or supressed immune function then the collagen within the drinks may not be used in the skin effectively.</p>
<p>Beauty supplements are fantastic if they are all natural ingredients that can be absorbed by the cells. Those that contain artificial ingredients, preservatives and fillers will be more harmful to the skin than beneficial. Incorporating natural healthy beauty supplements into a balanced lifestyle will most definitely bring results to the skin.</p>
<h2>Do you believe in just eating the basics such as avocado, blueberries, lots of water etc or do you think taking additional supplements is something people should look into as well?</h2>
<p>A balanced diet of fresh colourful vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats paired with adequate daily hydration will most definitely keep your skin at optimum health. As our skin is a window of our internal health, we must take care of the inside first and it will reflect on the outside.</p>
<p>Additional supplements can assist with rebalancing or detoxifying the organs and body systems and may assist with improving current skin conditions however should be recommended by the right practitioner.</p>

<p>Kerry has had an illustrious career having worked internationally at luxury spas, as Spa Manager at Ella Bache and winning Ella Bache National Therapist of the Year. Kerry’s work extends beyond the salon to voluntary work with women’s groups teaching women of all backgrounds about skincare.</p>

<h2>Why did you choose beauty therapy as a career?</h2>
<p>I have always been interested in the world of beauty since I can remember. My earliest beauty memory is giving all my friends manicures when I was about 10 years old!</p>
<h2>What do you love about beauty therapy?</h2>
<p>I love beauty therapy for several reasons; there are so many different avenues to choose from within the beauty industry and a huge variety of treatments you can perform or specialise in, as a beauty therapist you can make a big difference to someone’s day, and it is a career that you can do anywhere in the world.</p>
<h2>In addition to training, what is your background in beauty therapy?</h2>
<p>My first industry role was a Spa Therapist at a famous luxury golf resort in Scotland. I then worked at a boutique salon and a hotel spa, where I worked my way from Beauty Therapist to Assistant Manager. After moving to Australia, I worked at Ella Bache where I was appointed Senior Therapist, Assistant manager/Second in charge and then Salon Manager. I have also won industry awards – Ella Bache Therapist of the Month for Queensland and National Therapist of the Year, and have volunteered for women’s groups with disabilities, teaching women of various backgrounds about skincare basics.<br /></p>
<h2>What is the best part of being a beauty therapist?</h2>
<p>You get to meet so many different people and provide then with treatments that can make their day! It’s a very satisfying job, whether you are removing unwanted hair or completely relaxing someone with massage.<br /></p>
<h2>What is a myth about beauty therapy you would like to dispel?</h2>
<p>At times it may not be glamourous and can be hard work, but it is also very rewarding.</p>
<h2>What should people know about beauty therapy?</h2>
<p>It’s not just painting nails and looking pretty! You need to know a lot about anatomy and physiology, how the body systems and skin works. It’s really fascinating what the human body does!</p>
<h2>What steps should graduates take in getting their first industry role?</h2>
<p>Updating their resume, researching different salons and spas that they potentially would like to work for and then introducing themselves in person.</p>
<h2>How important is social media in today’s beauty landscape?</h2>
<p>What other things are important for building a brand within the beauty industry? Social media is a huge part of our life now. You could use social media to promote your own business or beauty empire! Also, networking at events, such as the Hair & Beauty Expo.</p>

<p>Someone who is determined, caring, love of learning (training never stops), approachable, has good time management skills and is ambitious.</p>

<h2>What led you to now teach up and coming beauty therapists at the National Academy of Beauty?</h2>
<p>After being in the beauty industry for nearly 15 years I decided I would really love to share my knowledge and skills to others.</p>

<p>Sharing everything I’ve learned and showcasing my skills to the future of beauty and making people feel good whether they are having a full body massage or a basic manicure.</p>

This is my go to foundation for clients who want their makeup to last all night long, once it sets it will not budge. The beauty of this product is its super light formulation, it stays dewy and fresh while evening out the skin tone without the mattifying finish that some long-lasting products achieve. It is great for all clients including mature skins.</p>

<h3>What do you love about this product and how do you use it?</h3>
<p>I love using Kryolan makeup blend as it allows you to customise the consistency of your base products. This can be used in conjunction with any foundation/corrector or contour products to create a liquid formulation. Just mix a couple of drops to your foundation to take it from heavy to lightweight coverage.</p>

The new online community account called @welovecoco is a curated feed designed to feature only user-generated content from Chanel beauty-loving Instagram users.</p>
<p>In the past reposting consumer content has been outside of the norm for luxury brands however with other makeup and beauty brands highlighting the benefits and opportunities in doing so (hello Urban Decay, M·A·C and Benefit Cosmetics), more businesses are engaging in this practice.</p>

<p>Over the last few years we’ve seen the rise of ‘Instagram makeup’ with key components such as baking, dramatic contour, blinding highlighter, lip plumping and overlining, brows ‘on fleek’, and next-level false lashes being a staple of the look. With its huge online presence and its universally loved finish, Emmy Award-winning makeup artist and advocate for the professional makeup industry, Kevin James Bennett, commented that social media had “absolutely [perpetuated] one aesthetic …. It’s like looking at a bunch of clones.”</p>

<p>Cue the rise of liquid lipsticks and liner sets cultivated by Kardashian/Jenner clan. Worldwide fans participated in ‘the Kylie Jenner challenge’ (suctioning one’s lips into a small glass to cause them to swell) and in 2015, Jenner admitted to lip augmentations and simultaneously launched Kylie Cosmetics and her flagship product: The Lip Kit. Their initial and subsequent releases have caused nothing less than complete chaos with website crashes, an eBay grey market, blatant counterfeits, and pandemonium as fans desperately scoured Jenner’s Instagram for hints of the next matte liquid lipstick and lip liner set. Competitors responded with their own renditions, reformulating, remarketing, and/or releasing for the first time (see: Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick Long-Wearing Matte Formula, Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipstick). Suddenly, liquid lipsticks were the most coveted product in any retailer online or offline.</p>
<p>So … what happened? Did the market become oversaturated? Did customers exhaust new shades to try and turned to new finishes instead? Or, more simply were they tired of the high maintenance and dry lips that accompanied a liquid lipstick?</p>
<p>One thing is clear – the humble bullet lipstick is back. From June 2017 onwards, brands brought it back to basics. Anastasia Beverly Hills released 30 shades of Matte Lipstick and a Professional Lip Palette, Fenty Beauty celebrated Christmas with their Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipsticks and affordable online brand ColourPop followed suit with 24 Lux Lipsticks.</p>
<p>Ironically, it was none other than Kim Kardashian’s make-up artist, Mario Dedivanovic, who confirmed the death of the liquid lip. When asked by Emily Ferber of Into The Gloss if they were on their way out as a trend he had this to say: “Gosh, I hope so …. When the colour is matte and heavy, that’s when you have to start worrying about undertones and all that …. I do think we are moving away from the matte lip. I’ve always loved a true creamy lipstick … and I think that look is definitely about to make a comeback.”</p>

<p>Looking to shake up your eye makeup? It’s time to give lower lid eyeshadow a try!</p>
<p>Make the lower lids the focal point of the face with glitter, bright shadow or heavy handed colour liner. Pair the look with a neutral shadow on the top lid to make the lower lid pop.</p>
<p>This fun look has been splashed across Instagram by makeup lovers all over the globe, so we thought we’d recreate our own version by blending yellow and gold and added a bit of glitter for some extra oomph!</p>

<li>Perfect the eye area with concealer and powder to set.</li>
<li>Groom the top eyelid with a sweep of a neutral colour through the socket line.</li>
<li>Choose your colours for the lower lid, you can use one or blend multiple.</li>
<li>Start at the inner or outer corner of the lower lash line.</li>
<li>Using a firm bullet brush, begin to sweep your colour across the lash line.</li>
<li>If you are using multiple colours, make sure that you blend them into each other.</li>
<li>Using a clean blending brush, blend the lower edge of the eyeshadow is blended into the skin.</li>
<li>Want some extra sparkle? Add glitter using a glitter glue stick.</li>
<li>Groom the rest of your eye with some eye liner and mascara.</li>

<p>Jess Alizzi and Kristy Wu (otherwise known as Kristy Who) are two of Melbourne’s most loved fashionistas. Kristy was the Style Ambassador for the grand opening of St Collins Lane in Melbourne, and the face of 2017’s Melbourne Fashion Week and runs her own blog kristywho.com. Jessica is a law graduate turn fashion blogger (Jessica and Love) who shares her styling tips and daily life battles as well as collaborating with brands such as Country Road.</p>
<p>With impeccable style and a permanent spot on Melbourne’s best events guest lists, Jess and Kristy need to be on their beauty A-game constantly, so we thought we’d invite them to the National Academy of Beauty our salon partner, Salon Blend, where they could indulge in luxe treatments with some of the best industry professionals.</p>
<p>The first stop for Jess and Kristy was the National Academy of Beauty campus where we train Australia’s up and coming beauty therapists and makeup artists. <p>Social media is a big part of people’s lives. While the platform may differ, this is true of both young and old. People compare notes, talk to friends and look at business pages to see what is happening. Business owners in the know use social media as yet another tool to reach out to potential customers. Finding your target audience and talking about what your services can do for them is something every cosmetologist should consider.</p>
<p><strong>How to Find Your Target Audience</strong></p>
<p>Do a little research. Determine ahead of time who you are trying to reach. Are your salon’s clients older or younger? Does your shop have a largely female or male clientele or is it a mix? What services do you provide most often? Choose your social media platform based on your target audience too. For instance, most <a href="http://ift.tt/2CZzKCt">Instagram users are females in urban areas</a>. If your clients stretch beyond one demographic group into another, target articles on each social media platform to engage that group. You can ask existing clients if they use social media as a way to determine how you can reach them on an ongoing basis.</p>
<p><strong>Social Media Platforms</strong></p>
<p>Take a look at several prominent platforms:</p>
<ul>
<li>Facebook: This social media platform has 1.9 billion users. They are predominantly female but a lot of men use it too, including Generation X and millennials. This is the most used platform. You can use this platform with ease to post pictures of your salon or styles that you favor.</li>
<li>Twitter: This platform has fewer users at 317,000 million. More men than women use Twitter, and the majority of users are in the 18 to 29 age range. More than half of the users do not post but many retweet. Twitter is great for discount promotions.</li>
<li>Instagram: Most users of this social media platform are under 35 and women outnumber men. One interesting note is most users follow brands. Pictures of some of your best results or even that last cosmetology school presentation can carry a lot of weight with followers.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Determine What Size Audience You Have</strong></p>
<p>When you are preparing to build your social media base, it is better to target specific audiences rather than reaching out to too many users. It is simple to do this since there are many guides available online that help you find a specific niche audience. Checking out your competitors is another way of doing this. See who they are targeting, and determine if that works for you too.  Facebook has apps that allow you to create a custom audience. In addition, once you’ve done that, Facebook can create a duplicate or lookalike audience, putting you in direct contact with even more potential customers.</p>

Your audience makes the effort to follow you because they trust your posts will be a source of good daily information about things they are interested in. Hang onto your audience with a well thought out content plan.</p>
<p><strong>Questions and Polls</strong></p>
<p>Use questions and polls to see what your audience is thinking. Readers love to be asked what they think, confirming that their opinion matters.</p>
<p><strong>Answer Complaints</strong></p>
<p>Don’t think ignoring a nasty remark or complaint can keep it from being noticed. Nothing could be further from the truth. Answer every complaint with openness. Show that you want to know what customers find annoying. They’ll respect you for it.</p>
