Makeup sales and application can provide an additional source of income for a salon.

Your salon may be a success, and clients may be pleased with the services you offer. While this is a great accomplishment, it is not time to rest on your laurels. For any business, it is important to constantly seek out ways to make it better. One way to do this and bring in even more customers is to expand the services you already offer. Here’s a look at the many services salons offer today and how this can impact your business.

Basic Services

From the time you were in cosmetology school, you learned to provide basic services such as hair styling, cutting, and coloring hair. There are many other basic services such as conditioning and shampooing hair, giving permanents, and relaxing hair. Some clients may require extra conditioning if their hair is excessively dry or brittle. Still others may want weaves or hair extensions. By providing these basic services, you have just scratched the surface of what can be done.

Extended Services

Since many salons are taking on the trappings of a spa where clients can relax, owners are stressing services that help accomplish just that with massage therapy, aromatherapy, and body wraps. In addition, they offer facials and peels. Many offer cosmetic applications as well as pedicures and manicures to give clients total body beauty.

Salons have come a long way from offering only haircuts and manicures.

The Nitty Gritty of Waxing

Waxing goes far beyond getting rid of unwanted facial hair today. There are different types of waxing. One is warm waxing. Using this method, wax that is heated to the desired temperature is applied to the area where hair removal is desired in the direction of the hairs’ growth. A strip of either paper or linen is applied to the wax, the skin is stretched, and the wax and hair are removed.

Hot wax, although hotter than the warm wax, differs in that the wax is applied against the direction of hair growth. The wax is then allowed to cool and pulled off the area in a swift motion, taking unwanted hair with it.

For both warm and hot waxes, the process is repeated every four to six weeks to keep the area looking perfect. Aside from the benefits of waxing, performing this service with a relatively low overhead brings in guaranteed revenue on a regular basis.

Keeping up with new trends in hairstyling services can help a salon increase in popularity and bring in new clients.

Other Services

There are other services you can provide to clients that must be done routinely. They are:

  • Tweezing eyebrow hair
  • Treading. This technique hails from India and is a variant to removing facial and eyebrow hair.
  • Eyebrow tinting: Avoiding harsh dyes, this technique uses vegetable dyes and hydrogen peroxide to change the color of the eyebrows. It is most effective for blonds trying to match their hair color. Usually, it needs to be repeated once a month.
  • Hydrotherapy: Such therapies use water often accompanied by mineral salts, mud, or seaweed.
  • Bling strands: This technique uses bling strands such as silk woven in the hair to add contrast and sparkle.

Learning new ways to add to your salon’s services is one benefit of continuing education online. After finishing cosmetology school, it is important to learn about new ways to provide beneficial services for clients.
