When you start out it is essential to invest in three types of scissors. Basically, this includes:
- Blending shears: Blending shears are used to remove excess weight from the hair and to blend hard lines. They have one blade that is serrated and one that is blunt. This type of scissors gives you better control over the cut and the amount of hair that is removed.
- Long blade: These shears are used for precise cutting such as around the ears.
- Everyday Scissors: These are used for routine cutting.
It is important to choose scissors that will perform well and provide comfort for your wrists and hands in the long days ahead.
The Basics
When you buy scissors, you want to choose the right ones for the type of cuts you will be doing and shears that are comfortable to handle. First, pay attention to comfort. Beveled blades are common in Europe, and convex blades are manufactured in much the same way as samurai swords, making them heavier. Overall, convex blades are more costly than beveled ones. However, once you buy a pair, if you maintain them well, you have them for the remainder of your career. Remember that convex blades need to sharpened by an expert. However, all shears need to be serviced annually.
Beveled vs. Convex
Beveled scissors have serrations on one blade. This is very helpful when you are just starting as it holds the hair and does not let it slide. Beveled scissors shine for slow cutting techniques and are not good for slice cutting. They can be used effectively on dry hair.
Convex scissors are great for slice cutting because of an extremely sharp edge. They can be used for all types of cutting and are the tool of choice for experienced stylists.
