Each day, cosmetologists put a great deal of time and effort into using their skills to help clients look and feel better. It is a fascinating profession, one that gives you the chance to get to know your clients. While you work, you hear about their hopes, disappointments, and family life.
For these reasons and others, you may find cosmetology to be somewhat challenging over the course of time. Burnout is common among cosmetologists. Here are six ways to avoid burnout before it happens.
Burning Out
Sometimes you don’t know it’s happening. You might notice feeling more tired than usual or wanting to start later and leaving the salon earlier. Not being able to get to sleep may become part of your daily routine. Burnout might manifest itself with a loss of enjoyment or a feeling that your emotions simply got up and left. Your performance at work may suffer or your ability to interact with family and friends may seem a chore. These are all facets of burnout.
Why Does Burnout Happen?
Burnout can happen for any number of reasons, but stress and overwork are the two main reasons. This parlays itself into a numbing existence. Trying to understand why it happens is not easy, but there are several reasons people who once loved what they do experience burnout.
A Gallup survey shows that only about 30 percent of workers feel engaged in their jobs. There are reasons to go to work every day beyond making a living. These are:
- Having a sense of pleasure
- Feeling energetic
- Getting satisfaction out of doing a job
- Sensing support by coworkers and staff
If these are lacking and workers are exposed to a stressful environment, burnout can result. Cosmetologists do work under stress much of the time. Appointments may run late, clients can become testy, and the days are long. Trying to stay in the “creative zone” can be daunting on a daily basis.
Exercise Away the Stress
One of the surest ways to avoid burnout is staying physical. Exercise raises your endorphin levels and makes you feel good about yourself. Try stretching between customers or organize an exercise program at work. Taking time after work to go to the gym or a yoga class can help with those tired muscles from standing all day.
Stay Away From Gossip
It’s easy for a cosmetologist to get caught up in the latest gossip from coworkers and clients. Keep it easy and talk about things that are positive. The latest Netflix original or a new movie is an easy conversation and won’t lead to an emotional oasis filled with negativity.
Take Time to Enjoy Your Life
It’s easy to get stuck in a rut at work and at home. Break out of it with one-day spas or a mini vacation centered around your needs. If money is an object, you can stay at home but enjoy activities away from your house. The object is to get back in touch with the things you love.
Enjoy the Company of Friends
When was the last time you got together with a few friends for no reason except to enjoy your time together? Probably quite a while. Relive a time when you sat around and talked about everything and anything. Go out to lunch, and eat whatever strikes your fancy. The warmth and encouragement only friends can provide are sure to boost your morale.
Take Up a Hobby
So, you enjoy painting, sewing or taking pictures. Whatever it is, do it. Schedule some time each week just for your hobby, or take a class to learn something new. The creative spark will carry over into everything else you do.
