How do you tell if a foundation is too dark vs. the wrong undertone?

I understand that a foundation that is too warm will look yellow or orange on the skin and one that is too cool will look pink. It's also pretty easy to tell if a foundation is too light, regardless of the undertone.

But how can you tell if your foundation is the right undertone but just a shade that is too dark as opposed to the wrong undertone?
